Just Some Pictures

So we're getting to the part of my trip where I'm settling into a routine and the most exciting things to blog about will be the weekend adventures. So I'm going to try to keep you entertained with some random pictures of various things I decide to photograph along the way.

I did go for a gorgeous run today outside of the city, but I left my phone at home. Next time I go, I'll snap a few pictures to share. I realized that if I want to maintain this pace of gelato consumption, I'm going to have to do some running on top of all the walking I do. I think it's worth it though. The running is gorgeous...and the gelato...well...do I really have to explain?

Last night we went out to dinner to start off the evening. It may be difficult to tell the size of the pizza based on this photograph, but it was HUGE. And yes, I did eat all of it. I have no regrets.

I also like to keep it classy with some vino rosso. It goes well with pretty much everything.

This is my apartment building. I realized I haven't really shown you where I live yet. I admit, I do feel a little bit strange running around my building snapping pictures, so I'll take them casually and add them slowly. Seem fair?

This is what I see if I walk right outside of my door and look left. My daily route requires me to turn right and go down the hill, but this gives a bit more information about where exactly it is that I'm living.

So, sometimes Margharita (my 11 year old Italian sister) will use my phone to write out long sentences and translate them into English. I have taken screen shots of a few of them because I think that it's hilarious. This particular one comes from one of her more boring homework assignments. As you can see, she wasn't so thrilled about the work at hand.

Also, as a total language geek, I think it's interesting to see how these sort of applications translate sentences and words between languages. Clearly languages don't translate directly, but we can usually get the general idea across.

Well, I think that's all for now. If there's something specific you'd like to see or know about, please please let me know, and I'll try to include it. Maybe then, some of my ramblings will actually be interesting to you :)

  1. I thought I would take a break from my Italian homework, because my eyes were getting a little blurry reading my iTranslate on my phone. (should have been wearing my glasses) And there's your iTranslate! Some of the translations can be hilarious, sort of like with autocorrect, Where are you in your textbook? I thought maybe I would write something in Italian next time to go along with your texbook. Even though you have settled down into your routine, I still find it very interesting. In what year was your apartment built? I would love to see more pictures. Does your family have a washing machine? When I was there 50 years ago, my family was the only one with a washing machine, but no dryer. Do people still hang their clothes outside on lines extending out of the windows. Almost everyone else in the class lived in the city (within the walls) in apartments built before 1492. I lived in a brand new apartment building with beautiful marble floors. When you mention the name Camilla, for some reason it makes me think Porta Camilla. Is that one of the porte to enter/exit the walled city? There are so many things that pop into my head when I read your posts -- things I didn't even know were still stored in my brain. So, please know how much I enjoy your blog.
It's a nice respite from this very cold winter.

  2. We're not very far in the textbook...I think around page 40 but I feel like I'm beginning to learn faster. I'd love if you wrote to me in Italian!
I don't know when the building was built but I think it's pretty old. All I know is that it's off of Via Salicotto. Speaking of which, I'm terrible with the names of streets, places etc. so I can't tell you if Porta Camilla is at the edge of the city.
I'm so so glad you're enjoying the blog!
